The Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoPNG) on April 14, 2026, issued measures to Ensure Energy Security and Citizen Safety amid West Asia Crisis.
Amid the evolving situation in West Asia, particularly due to disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, the Government of India has taken comprehensive measures to ensure energy security, smooth logistics, and citizen safety. The government has assured that there is no need for panic buying, as adequate supplies of petrol, diesel, LPG, PNG, and CNG are being maintained. Citizens are advised to rely on official communication, conserve energy, and adopt alternative fuels such as PNG, electric cooking, or induction systems.
On the supply side, the government has implemented multiple demand and supply management strategies. These include increasing refinery output, prioritizing LPG supply for essential sectors like healthcare and agriculture, and enhancing availability of alternative fuels such as kerosene and coal. States and Union Territories have been empowered under the Essential Commodities Act to monitor supply and curb hoarding and black marketing. Enforcement actions have intensified, with thousands of raids conducted and strict penalties imposed on erring distributors. At the same time, digital systems like online LPG booking and delivery authentication codes are being widely adopted to improve transparency and efficiency.
Significant efforts are also being made to expand natural gas infrastructure and reduce dependence on LPG. PNG connections are being actively promoted, with incentives offered by gas distribution companies and faster approvals for pipeline infrastructure. Additional LPG allocations are being linked to states’ progress in PNG adoption, while initiatives like the National PNG Drive 2.0 aim to accelerate this transition. Meanwhile, refineries are operating at high capacity with sufficient crude stock, and pricing interventions—such as excise duty cuts and export levies—have been introduced to stabilize domestic fuel availability and protect consumers.
Beyond energy, the government is ensuring maritime safety and the welfare of Indian nationals abroad. Indian vessels and seafarers remain safe, with active monitoring and repatriation efforts underway. The Ministry of External Affairs is coordinating closely with foreign governments and Indian missions to assist citizens, issue travel advisories, and facilitate evacuation where required. Flights continue from operational airspaces, and alternative routes are being used where restrictions exist. Overall, the government continues to actively monitor the situation and take coordinated steps to maintain stability, safeguard citizens, and ensure uninterrupted essential services.
