The University Grants Commission (UGC) on April 16, 2026, notified regarding the Guidelines on the "Prime Minister Internship Scheme [PMIS].
The following has been stated:
• The scheme aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry requirements by offering real-world exposure across various sectors.
• Under the scheme, a pilot project has been implemented and extended till December 2026, targeting over 1 lakh internship opportunities, with participation from companies being voluntary and largely based on CSR engagement. The internships are defined as training arrangements (not employment), focusing on skill development and practical experience.
• Key provisions include internship duration of 6 to 9 months (with at least half the period spent in actual work environments), eligibility for students and graduates, and application through an online portal. The scheme operates independently of other skill development or apprenticeship programs and emphasizes inclusivity and employability enhancement.
