Commercial ComplianceThe Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), on April 6, 2026, issued a notification under Rule 15(1) of the Bureau of Indian Standards Rules, 2018, announcing the establishment of revised Indian Standards. These standards, established on March 30, 2026, primarily relate to medical and surgical instruments, ensuring updated specifications and improved quality benchmarks.

The newly established standards include IS 7116:2026 for obstetric forceps, IS 7117:2026 for umbilical cord scissors, IS 8345:2026 for thoracic surgery instruments (bulldog clamps), and IS 8773:2026 for lacrimal sac dissectors. These are revised versions aimed at aligning with modern medical practices and technical advancements.

The notification also provides for concurrent validity of earlier standards, which will remain in force until their withdrawal on September 30, 2026. This transition period allows manufacturers and stakeholders sufficient time to comply with the updated standards.
