Industry Specific ComplianceThe Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on April 16, 2026, issued the notification regarding the Advisory regarding non-use of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) leaves in crude or extract or any other form in food products.

The following has been stated namely: -

• The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India regulates health supplements, nutraceuticals, and related products under the 2016 regulations, with Schedule IV listing permitted botanicals. 

• Only the roots and their extracts of Ashwagandha are allowed for use in such products, within prescribed limits. 

• Some manufacturers have been using ashwagandha leaves and their extracts, which is not permitted under the regulations. 

FSSAI has clarified that ashwagandha leaves in any form are prohibited, and the Ministry of AYUSH has also directed manufacturers to use only roots and their extracts. 

• All Food Business Operators must strictly comply, failing which action will be taken under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, with authorities instructed to ensure strict monitoring and enforcement.
