Industry Specific ComplianceThe Ministry of Textiles (MoT), on April 20, 2026, announced a revision of stock limits for raw jute to ensure fair distribution and curb hoarding practices. The authority reduced stock limits for raw jute traders and balers to zero, mandating them to sell their entire stock within the prescribed timeline to improve availability for jute mills and stabilize prices.

Further, jute mills and processing units are permitted to retain stock equivalent to 45 days’ consumption, while all entities must declare stock positions on the Jute SMART portal and comply with timelines for sale and delivery. Enforcement authorities have been empowered to inspect, seize excess stock, and initiate action against non-compliant entities.

Non-compliance will attract penal provisions under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, including penalties under Sections 6, 7, and 9. The measures aim to stabilize raw jute supply, protect industry employment, and safeguard the interests of farmers and manufacturers.
