The PIB Headquarters on April 26, 2026, issued the Small Hydro Power Development Scheme.
The following has been stated: -
•The Government of India has approved a ₹2,584.60 crore scheme to boost small hydro power (1–25 MW) and add around 1,500 MW capacity.
•India has already developed about 5,171 MW out of a total potential of over 21,133 MW, leaving significant scope for expansion.
•The scheme provides financial support, promotes investment (~₹15,000 crore), and focuses on hilly and North-Eastern regions.
•It will generate about 51 lakh person-days of employment and support local manufacturing and rural development.
•Overall, the initiative aims to strengthen clean, reliable, and decentralized energy while promoting sustainable and inclusive growth.
