The India Meteorological Department (IMD), on April 27, 2026, issued a heat wave and temperature status update highlighting prevailing high temperatures across India. Maximum temperatures ranged between 40°C and 46°C in most parts of the country, with the highest recorded at Banda, Uttar Pradesh (45.6°C). Many regions, including parts of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and southern states, experienced above to appreciably above normal temperatures, while relatively cooler conditions persisted in the western Himalayan region and parts of the northeast.
Heat wave conditions were reported in isolated areas of Vidarbha, while warm night conditions were observed in parts of Uttar Pradesh. At 14:30 IST on April 29, Gadchiroli and Chandrapur recorded temperatures of 44.2°C. Minimum temperatures were also above normal in several regions, including Odisha, Meghalaya, and large parts of central and northern India, indicating persistent heat stress conditions.
The IMD has issued warnings that heat wave conditions are likely to continue in parts of Vidarbha and expected over West Rajasthan from May 1 to May 3. Additionally, hot and humid conditions are forecast over Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Coastal Karnataka, while warm night conditions are likely in parts of East Madhya Pradesh. These conditions call for precautionary measures to mitigate heat-related risks.
