The Government of Nagaland, Transport Department, on February 18, 2026, notified a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for registration of Vintage Motor Vehicles in the State pursuant to the Central Motor Vehicles (Fifteenth Amendment) Rules, 2021 issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
The notification provides that vehicles more than 50 years old from the date of initial registration and maintained in original condition without substantial modifications to chassis, body shell or engine shall qualify as Vintage Motor Vehicles. Registration will be processed by registering authorities through the VAHAN portal in accordance with Chapter IIIA of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.
The SOP also specifies documentation requirements including insurance policy, bill of entry for imported vehicles, old registration certificate, proof of vehicle age, residential proof of owner and NOC for vehicles registered outside the State. The framework also incorporates provisions relating to validity, display of registration marks, sale and transfer restrictions, and road usage norms for vintage vehicles.
