The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution (MoCAF&PD) on April 27, 2026, notified regarding the Fees for verification of weights and measures by the Government Approved Test centres approved under the Legal Metrology (Government Approved Test Centre) Rules, 2013.
The following has been stated:
• The Department clarified the fee structure applicable to Government Approved Test Centres (GATCs) under the Legal Metrology (Government Approved Test Centre) Rules, 2013, as amended in 2025. The Rules were introduced to strengthen the country’s verification infrastructure by permitting qualified private laboratories and industries to verify weights and measures, and the 2025 amendment expanded the categories of weights and measures covered under GATCs.
• The clarification states that manufacturers designated as GATCs cannot charge any separate fee for verification of weights and measures manufactured by themselves. However, for re-verification of such products, they may charge a fee up to the maximum prescribed under the Fifth Schedule of the Rules, though they are free to charge a lower amount.
• Similarly, third-party GATCs may charge fees for verification or re-verification only up to the maximum limit prescribed under the Fifth Schedule, and cannot exceed it under any circumstances. Any lower fee charged by GATCs must be displayed on the GATC portal for transparency and stakeholder information.
