Industry Specific ComplianceThe Government of Karnataka, on May 14, 2026, notified the Karnataka Excise (Lease of the Right of Retail Vend of Wine or Fortified Wine) (Amendment) Rules, 2026, further to amend the Karnataka Excise (Lease of the Right of Retail Vend of Wine or Fortified Wine) Rules, 2008.

The following has been stated:-

•The Karnataka Government has amended the Karnataka Excise (Lease of the Right of Retail Vend of Wine or Fortified Wine) Rules, 2008.

The term “Year” in Rule 2(8) has been replaced with “Excise Year” for greater clarity and uniformity in interpretation.

•Under the revised Rule 7(2), licences granted for retail vend of wine or fortified wine will now remain valid for 5 excise years, including the year of grant.

•The licence validity is subject to annual payment of the prescribed licence fee and additional licence fee at prevailing rates.

•Similarly, Rule 8(2) has been amended to allow renewal of leases for a period of 5 excise years, including the year of renewal, subject to yearly fee payments.

They shall come into force from May 12, 2026.
