Labour ComplianceThe Ministry of Labour and Employment (MoLE), on May 12, 2026, issued a notification appointing authorities for granting sanction of prosecution for offences under Chapter V and Chapter VI of the Code on Social Security, 2020. The notification has been issued in exercise of powers conferred under sub-section (2) of section 136 of the Code on Social Security, 2020. 

Under the notification, the Central Government has designated the Chief Labour Commissioner (Central) and the Additional Chief Labour Commissioner (Central) as the competent authorities empowered to sanction prosecution for offences under the specified chapters of the Code. The appointment applies to establishments for which the Central Government is the “appropriate Government” under clause (a) of sub-section (3) of section 2 of the Code on Social Security, 2020.

The notification is intended to streamline enforcement and prosecution processes relating to compliance obligations under Chapter V and Chapter VI of the Code on Social Security, 2020 by clearly identifying the competent sanctioning authorities at the central level.
