The National Medical Commission (NMC), on May 18, 2026, issued the draft “Graduate Medical Education (Amendment) Regulations, 2026” proposing amendments to the Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023 relating to the maximum duration permitted for completion of the MBBS course. The amendment proposes substitution of the existing proviso under Clause 21 of Chapter V dealing with Competency Based Dynamic Curriculum at Undergraduate level. While retaining the restriction of a maximum of four attempts for passing the First Professional MBBS examination, the draft increases the outer time limit for continuing the undergraduate medical course from nine years to ten years from the date of joining the first MBBS course, including the compulsory rotatory medical internship. The authority has invited objections and suggestions from stakeholders within 30 days from publication of the draft notification in the Official Gazette. Comments are to be submitted only through the designated email process prescribed by NMC. The draft notification has also been made available on the official website of National Medical Commission.
