The Government of Punjab on May 25, 2026, issued a notification granting exemption to workers employed in registered shops and commercial establishments in the State to enable them to exercise their voting rights during the Municipal Elections 2026 scheduled on May 26, 2026 (Tuesday). The notification has been issued pursuant to the election schedule notified by the State Election Commission Punjab vide Memo No. SEC-PE-SAM(CME)/2026/3324 dated May 18, 2026.
Exercising powers under Section 10(1) of the Punjab Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1958, the Governor of Punjab exempted those employees working in registered shops and establishments who are enrolled as voters within the revenue jurisdiction of Municipal Corporations, Municipal Councils, and Nagar Panchayats from the operation of weekly holiday provisions on the polling date. The exemption is intended to ensure that eligible workers are provided an opportunity to cast their votes in the municipal elections.
The notification further clarifies that May 26, 2026 (Tuesday) shall not be treated as a “Closed Day” in substitution of the weekly off falling during the period between May 24, 2026 and May 30, 2026. Employers and establishments covered under the Act are required to comply with the directions issued in the notification.
