The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), on May 14, 2026, notified the Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, Toxins and Residues) Amendment Regulations, 2026 to amend the Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, Toxins and Residues) Regulations, 2011. The amendments have been issued after completion of the public consultation process initiated through draft regulations published in September 2024, during which no objections or suggestions were received.
The amendments revise standards relating to metal contaminants, crop contaminants and residues in food products. Key changes include expansion of the scope of limits for lead and cadmium to include pulse flours along with pulses, revised provisions relating to arsenic limits in edible fats and oils including fish oils, updated aflatoxin standards for oils and oilseeds, and revised limits for saffrole in beverages and foods containing mace or nutmeg kernel.
The notification also amends residue provisions under Regulation 2.3 by omitting clause (1) of sub-regulation 2.3.2 and introducing additional residue limits for Trimethoprim and Oxolinic acid in seafoods, including shrimps, prawns and fishery products. The amended regulations will come into force from December 1, 2026.
