The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) on May 18, 2026, issued an Advisory on Cosmetic Products under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.
The following has been stated:-
•Cosmetics are products used for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering appearance under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.
•Manufacturing and import of cosmetics are regulated under the Cosmetics Rules, 2020.
•Injectable products are not considered cosmetics, and cosmetics cannot be administered through injections.
•The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) publishes lists of restricted and generally not recognised as safe (GNRAS) ingredients.
•Cosmetic labels must not contain false or misleading claims, and manufacturer markings cannot be altered or removed.
•Use of prohibited ingredients, misleading claims, cosmetic treatment use, or injectable application violates the Act and Rules.
