Industry Specific ComplianceThe Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on May 25, 2026, issued the Draft Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Amendment Regulations, 2026, further to amend the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011.

The following has been amended:

• The draft introduces standards for Chilli Seed Oil, Muskmelon Seed Oil, Okra Seed Oil, and Tomato Seed Oil, covering quality parameters such as moisture, impurities, acid value, iron and copper limits. It also prescribes that solvent-extracted oils must be refined before human consumption and should meet hexane residue limits, while pressed oils must be free from hexane residues. No additives will be permitted in pressed oils.

• Further, a new category for edible seeds has been introduced covering seeds such as watermelon, cucumber, pumpkin, sunflower, sesame, and flaxseed. Standards have been specified for moisture content, free fatty acid levels, and foreign matter to ensure product quality and safety.

• Additionally, the draft proposes permitting Potassium Polyaspartate (INS 456) up to 100 mg/kg in grape wines under the food additives regulations.

• The last date for submitting objections or suggestions is July 24, 2026.
