The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (MoAFW) on May 22, 2026, issued the notification regarding the amendment to notification no. S.O. 1536(E), dated the May 12, 2017 regarding the “Crop species eligible for registration” (notification attached below).
The following has been stated namely: -
• The amendment adds 10 new plant varieties to the official list of protected plant varieties under the Act.
• The newly added species include:
Knol Khol, Turnip, Avocado, Dragon Fruit, Kale, Sapota, Lettuce, Adenium, Bambara Groundnut, and Aranda Orchid.
• Each entry includes the botanical name and commonly used names, formally recognizing them under the plant variety protection framework.
• The inclusion aims to strengthen plant variety registration, farmers’ rights protection, and biodiversity management by officially covering additional horticultural and agricultural crops.
