The Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) on June 01, 2026, notified the Immigration and Foreigners (Amendment) Rules, 2026 to amend the Immigration and Foreigners Rules, 2025.
The following has been stated:-
•The Government has amended the Immigration and Foreigners Rules, 2025 to allow certain foreigners to apply for registration any time before completing 180 days in India, while late registration beyond this period will be permitted only in emergent circumstances.
•The amendments also exempt children with at least one Indian parent from mandatory registration where Indian citizenship is being retained, while requiring parents to report any later acquisition of foreign citizenship by the child within 30 days.
•Additionally, a drafting correction has been made regarding reporting timelines, and a formal online appeal mechanism has been introduced for owners or keepers aggrieved by directions of civil authorities, with appeals to be decided by the Commissioner, Bureau of Immigration, within 60 days, as far as possible.
They shall come into force on June 01, 2026.
