Finance & Taxation ComplianceThe Reserve Bank of India (RBI), on June 02, 2026, announced the launch of payment systems connectivity between India and Cambodia, enabling QR code-based cross-border merchant payments.

The following has been stated:

As part of RBI’s ongoing efforts to enhance cross-border payments through the interlinking of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with fast payment systems of other countries, the first phase of QR payment interoperability between India and Cambodia has gone live. Developed through collaboration between NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) and Acleda Bank Plc. under the guidance of the RBI and the National Bank of Cambodia, the initiative enables Indian travellers in Cambodia to make real-time merchant payments using their UPI applications at more than 4.5 million merchants accepting KHQR, Cambodia’s national QR standard.

The facility is expected to provide a secure, transparent, and convenient alternative to cash and card payments. In the second phase, Cambodian travellers will be able to make UPI QR-based merchant payments in India.
