The Animal Husbandry Department, Meghalaya on June 02, 2026, issued ASF Control Measures Following Fresh Outbreaks.
The Government of Meghalaya has issued a notification after confirming outbreaks of African Swine Fever (ASF) in multiple villages across East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, Ri-Bhoi, and Eastern West Khasi Hills districts. Acting under the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009, the objective is to contain, control, and eradicate the disease through strict zoning and biosecurity measures.
The State has classified affected areas into Infected Zones (1 km radius) and Surveillance Zones (10 km radius). In infected zones, stringent restrictions include a complete ban on movement of pigs, pork products, feed, and related equipment, closure of pig markets and slaughterhouses, prohibition of slaughter and swill feeding, and mandatory disposal of carcasses through deep burial with lime. Strict hygiene, disinfection, and access control measures have been enforced, with penalties for violations.
In surveillance zones, controlled movement is allowed within the zone but restricted towards infected or disease-free areas. Biosecurity measures, safe disposal of waste, disinfection of vehicles, and continuous veterinary surveillance are mandated. Movement of pork products outside these zones and animal gatherings involving pigs are prohibited.
For free zones, preventive measures such as maintaining hygiene, restricting contact with wild boars, banning swill feeding, and monitoring animal health have been advised. The government has also called for cooperation from local authorities and communities, emphasizing that continuous surveillance and coordinated action are critical to protect pig farmers’ livelihoods and prevent further spread of ASF.
