The Ministry of Coal (MoC) on June 03, 2026, notified regarding the National Coal Index with Base year 2017-18 (provisional) for April 2026.
The following has been stated:
• It has released the provisional National Coal Index (NCI) with base year 2017-18 for April 2026. The NCI, which serves as a benchmark for coal pricing and revenue-sharing calculations in the coal sector, increased from 138.96 in March 2026 to 146.61 in April 2026, indicating a rise in coal prices during the month.
• The index shows an increase across major coal categories. The non-coking coal index rose from 134.30 to 142.97, while the coking coal index increased from 152.37 to 157.11. Representative coal prices also registered an upward trend, with the price of G1 grade coal increasing from ₹10,157 per tonne in March 2026 to ₹10,950 per tonne in April 2026, and similar increases were observed in other grades.
• The National Coal Index is compiled using an approved methodology and reflects price movements across different grades and sectors of the Indian coal market. The April 2026 figures indicate a general strengthening of coal prices compared to the previous month.
