The Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) on May 01, 2026, issued a public notice directing all entities qualifying as Bulk Waste Generators (BWGs) under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 (notified by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change on 27 January 2026 and effective from 1 April 2026) to identify themselves with the concerned local authority and ensure compliance with the Rules. A BWG includes institutions, commercial establishments, industries, hotels, hospitals, educational institutions, residential societies, and other entities having a floor area of 20,000 sq. m. or more, water consumption of 40,000 litres per day, or solid waste generation of 100 kg per day.
The notice emphasizes mandatory segregation of waste into four streams: (i) dry waste, (ii) wet waste, (iii) sanitary waste, and (iv) special care waste. Special care waste includes items such as discarded paint containers, pesticide cans, CFL bulbs, tube lights, expired medicines, mercury thermometers, batteries, used needles, syringes, and other contaminated materials that require separate handling and disposal.
All eligible entities across Meghalaya are required to coordinate with the respective municipal bodies, local authorities, or autonomous district councils for compliance. The initiative aims to strengthen scientific waste management practices, improve environmental protection, and ensure effective implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 throughout the State.
