The Government of Maharashtra on June 12, 2026, issued directives to Regulate Sale of Petrol and Diesel.
The Government of Maharashtra has issued an order to regulate the sale and distribution of petroleum products such as petrol and diesel in view of ongoing global geopolitical developments that have disrupted the energy supply chain. Although adequate stock is currently available in the state, instances were observed where bulk industrial consumers were purchasing large quantities of diesel from retail outlets, raising concerns over misuse, hoarding, and irregular practices.
To address this, the government has issued strict guidelines. Institutional, industrial, and commercial consumers are prohibited from purchasing petrol and diesel from retail fuel stations and must procure fuel only from designated wholesale outlets. Retail fuel stations are instructed to sell fuel only directly into vehicle tanks or into containers certified by the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization (PESO). Additionally, a cap has been imposed, restricting diesel sales to a maximum of 200 liters per customer per vehicle per day, and resale of such fuel is strictly prohibited.
Oil marketing companies and petrol pump dealers are required to strictly enforce these rules and ensure compliance across all retail outlets. Regional offices must communicate these directives promptly and monitor adherence. Any violations, including hoarding, black marketing, adulteration, unauthorized filling, overpricing, or illegal storage and transfer, will invite strict action under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 and related regulations.
These instructions will remain in force as per the Central Government’s temporary order dated June 11, 2026, and aim to ensure fair distribution, prevent malpractices, and maintain fuel availability across the state.
