BIS Provisional Indian Standard on Assessment of Biodegradability of Plastics Established

Commercial ComplianceThe Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), on June 11, 2026, notified the establishment of a new Provisional Indian Standard, IS 19877T: 2026 – “Assessment of Potential Biodegradability of Plastics Under Controlled Laboratory Conditions.” The standard has been issued under Rule 27(1) of the Bureau of Indian Standards Rules, 2018.

The newly established provisional standard provides a framework for assessing the biodegradability potential of plastic materials under controlled laboratory conditions, supporting efforts towards environmental sustainability and scientific evaluation of biodegradable plastics.

The standard came into effect on June 11, 2026. No existing Indian Standard has been withdrawn pursuant to this notification. The provisional standard shall remain valid up to June 11, 2029, unless revised, confirmed, or withdrawn earlier by BIS.
