The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, on June 12, 2026, issued instructions for the implementation of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology Notification S.O. 2204(E) dated May 5, 2026, which amends the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021. The amendment substitutes the description of goods at Serial No. 50 of the Schedule with “Standalone Hard Disk Drives”.
The instruction clarifies that USB Type External Hard Disk Drives will continue to be governed by the existing notified provisions. However, for all other categories of standalone hard disk drives (HDDs), the requirements prescribed under the Compulsory Registration Order, 2021 will become applicable from November 5, 2026. This change expands the regulatory coverage of the registration framework to additional standalone HDD products.
CBIC has directed all Customs formations to sensitize field officers regarding the revised regulatory requirements to ensure uniform implementation and enforcement. Any operational difficulties encountered during implementation are to be brought to the notice of the Board for appropriate resolution.
