The Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI), on June 12, 2026, released the Consumer Price Index (CPI) data for May 2026, reporting retail inflation at 3.93% on a year-on-year basis, up from 3.48% in April 2026. Rural inflation stood at 4.25%, while urban inflation was 3.53%. Food inflation, measured by the Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI), increased to 4.78%, compared to 4.20% in April 2026.
Among major categories, Restaurants and Accommodation Services (5.75%), Food and Beverages (4.55%), and Personal Care, Social Protection and Miscellaneous Goods and Services (18.46%) recorded notable inflation. Items witnessing the highest inflation included Silver Jewellery (155.23%), Tomato (48.43%), Gold/Diamond/Platinum Jewellery (40.93%), Ginger (32.49%), and Raisins (21.97%). Conversely, prices of Potato (-23.71%), Peas (-11.47%), Motor Cars and Jeeps (-7.19%), Cumin (-4.59%), and Motorcycles and Scooters (-3.56%) remained subdued.
The All-India CPI (Combined) index rose to 105.91, while the CFPI reached 105.35 in May 2026. The National Statistical Office (NSO) achieved a 100% response rate from both rural and urban markets for price collection during the month.
