The Government of Tamil Nadu on June 05, 2026, issued the Tamil Nadu Panchayats (Amendment) Act, 2026, further to amend the Tamil Nadu Panchayats Act, 1994.
This shall come into force from January 06, 2025.
The following has been amended, namely:
• In section 261-A, the expression “upto the 5th day of January 2026”, the expression “upto the 5th day of July 2026” shall be substituted.
• The amendment retrospectively validates the appointment of Special Officers managing Village Panchayats, Panchayat Union Councils, and District Panchayats (except in certain specified districts) from January 06, 2026. It also legalizes all actions and decisions taken by these officers until the publication of the Amendment Act, ensuring uninterrupted local administration and protecting their actions from legal challenges.
