The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), on June 9, 2026, notified the establishment of several new and revised Indian Standards under Rule 15(1) of the BIS Rules, 2018. The notification covers standards relating to household electrical appliances, road and tunnel lighting, winding wires for submersible motors, internship quality guidelines, electrical installation devices, and electrical machine components. Existing standards identified for replacement will remain concurrently in force until their withdrawal on December 9, 2026.
Key standards established include IS 302 (Part 2/Sec 99): 2026 for safety requirements of commercial electric hoods, IS 1944: 2026 (Second Revision) for road and tunnel lighting, and a series of revised standards under IS 8783: 2026 governing winding wires for submersible motors, including specifications for dielectric and jacket materials, testing methods, and insulated winding wires. The notification also introduces IS 19465: 2026 for time-delay switches used in household and fixed electrical installations and IS 29997: 2026/ISO 29997: 2025 providing quality guidelines for host organizations offering internships.
In addition, IS/IEC 60136: 2024 relating to dimensions, markings, and testing of carbon brushes and brush holders for electrical machines has been adopted, replacing IS 14376: 1996. Several earlier versions of standards, including IS 1944: 1970, IS 8783 (Parts 2, 3 and 4): 1995, and IS 14376: 1996, are scheduled for withdrawal on December 9, 2026, allowing a six-month transition period for industry compliance and implementation.
