The Government of Kerala, on June 15, 2026, notified the Rules of Business of the Government of Kerala (Amendment) Rules, 2026, amending the Rules of Business of the Government of Kerala under Article 166 of the Constitution of India. The amendment came into force immediately upon notification.
The amendment creates a new Elderly Welfare Department within the Secretariat by inserting it into the list of Government Departments and renumbering the existing departmental entries accordingly. The move institutionalizes a dedicated administrative framework for matters relating to the welfare and protection of senior citizens in the State.
The newly constituted Elderly Welfare Department has been assigned responsibility for the administration of laws and rules relating to elderly welfare, implementation of welfare policies and centrally sponsored schemes, execution of various welfare programmes for senior citizens, oversight of the Kerala State Elderly Commission, and administration of old age homes.
