Industry Specific ComplianceThe Government of Maharashtra, on June 22, 2026, issued a notification regarding Electricity Duty Exemptions for IT, ITeS, and Data Centre Units under Maharashtra IT/ITeS Policy, 2023.

The following has been stated:-

•This official gazette notification, issued by the Government of Maharashtra under the Maharashtra Electricity Duty Act, 2016, outlines new electricity duty exemptions to support the state's Information Technology (IT) and IT-enabled Services (ITeS) Policy, 2023, along with the Policy for Integrated Green Data Centre Parks.

•The directive waives the entirety of the electricity duty on energy consumption for qualifying IT and ITeS units. Under the specified schedule, new IT/ITeS units established in designated IT parks receive a 10-year exemption if located within Zone-1, and a 15-year exemption if located in other zones.

•Furthermore, specific entities—such as units operating within Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and 100% export-oriented IT/ITeS units—are granted permanent exemptions.

•New and existing Data Centre units qualify for a 20-year exemption, although AVGC and emerging technologies are generally excluded from these specific benefits.

•To maintain eligibility, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd. (MSEDCL) will conduct annual compliance inspections.

•Finally, these exemptions officially commence from the date production or services begin, and no refunds are permitted for duties paid prior to the sanctioning of the exemption.
