The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) on June 22, 2026, notified regarding the Index of Eight Core Industries (Base Year: 2011-12=100) for May 2026.
The following has been stated:
• The Index of Eight Core Industries (ICI) grew by 0.5% in May 2026 compared to May 2025, indicating subdued industrial growth. The cumulative growth during April–May 2026-27 stood at 1.1%, while April 2026 growth was revised to 1.8%. Growth was driven by Steel (5.0%), Cement (8.4%), and Electricity (8.7%), reflecting strong demand from infrastructure and construction activities.
• However, Coal (-9.3%), Crude Oil (-4.6%), Natural Gas (-4.9%), Refinery Products (-8.7%), and Fertilizers (-0.9%) recorded declines, which pulled down overall performance. As these eight industries account for 40.27% of the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), the data points to moderate industrial activity in the early months of FY 2026-27.
