The Government of Maharashtra on February 16, 2026, issued the Maharashtra Renewable Energy & Energy Storage Policy 2025-26 to 2035-36.
India has set ambitious climate goals under its updated NDC submitted in August 2022, including reducing emissions intensity by 45% by 2030 (from 2005 levels), achieving 50% of installed power capacity from non-fossil sources, and reaching 500 GW of non-fossil capacity. These efforts align with the long-term target of net-zero emissions by 2070 and are supported by initiatives like the LIFE (Lifestyle for Environment) movement. Active participation from states is critical to achieving these national targets.
Maharashtra, driven by rapid industrialization and urbanization, has seen a sharp rise in electricity demand. The state has increasingly shifted from conventional energy to renewable sources, supported by policies introduced since 1995, including the Renewable Energy Policies of 2015 and 2020. By January 2026, the state achieved 31.3 GW of renewable energy capacity, with significant growth in generation from 10.7 BU in FY 2015-16 to 19.6 BU in FY 2024-25. Despite this progress, conventional sources still dominate overall electricity generation.
The state’s energy demand and supply have grown substantially, with peak demand reaching 30.7 GW in March 2025 and total electricity supply increasing to 201.8 BU in FY 2024-25. Future demand is expected to rise to 260–270 BU by 2030. Key initiatives such as the Mukhyamantri Saur Krushi Vahini Yojana (MSKVY) and its 2.0 version aim to solarize agricultural feeders and shift farm electricity usage to daytime, alongside promoting energy storage, green hydrogen, and pumped storage solutions.
To address grid reliability challenges from variable renewable sources, Maharashtra has introduced the Renewable Energy and Energy Storage Policy 2025–26 to 2035–36. The policy focuses on expanding renewable energy and storage through clear targets, infrastructure development, regulatory support, and innovation. It also emphasizes periodic review, alignment with MERC regulations, and integration with existing policies to ensure sustainable, affordable, and secure energy for the state.
