The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoP&NG) on June 11, 2026, notified the Motor Spirit and High Speed Diesel (Temporary Regulation of Supply through Retail Outlets) Order, 2026.
The following has been stated:-
•The Central Government has issued the Motor Spirit & High-Speed Diesel (Temporary Regulation of Supply through Retail Outlets) Order, 2026, under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, to ensure the uninterrupted availability of petrol and diesel, prevent diversion and hoarding, and safeguard supplies for retail consumers during supply disruptions.
•The Order prohibits industrial, commercial, and institutional consumers from purchasing fuel through retail outlets, limits diesel sales at retail outlets to 200 litres per customer/vehicle per day in vehicle tanks or PESO-approved containers, and mandates compliance by Oil Marketing Companies and retail dealers.
•The restrictions are valid for an initial period of up to 90 days (unless revoked or extended), with enforcement through search, seizure, and penalties under the Essential Commodities Act and other applicable laws.
It shall come into force on June 30, 2026.
