Industry Specific ComplianceThe Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), on June 27, 2026, notified the constitution of the Bureau of Port Security (BoPS) under the provisions of the Merchant Shipping Act, 2025. The Bureau has been established with effect from the date of publication of the notification to strengthen the security framework for vessels and port facilities.

The notification provides that the Bureau of Port Security (BoPS) shall function as the designated body responsible for matters relating to the security of vessels and port facilities. The Bureau has been constituted in exercise of the powers conferred under Section 13(1) of the Merchant Shipping Act, 2025, which empowers the Central Government to establish such a body for maritime security purposes.

The notification further specifies that the Director General of Maritime Administration shall serve as the Director General of the Bureau of Port Security (BoPS) until further orders. The constitution of the Bureau is aimed at strengthening institutional oversight and coordination of maritime and port security under the framework of the Merchant Shipping Act, 2025.
