The Ministry of Coal (MoC) on July 01, 2026, notified regarding the National Coal Index with the base year 2017-18 (provisional) for May 2026.
The overall National Coal Index declined marginally from 146.61 in April 2026 to 145.78 in May 2026, indicating a slight softening in domestic coal prices. While the indices for non-coking coal and coking coal registered minor decreases, the indices for high-grade and middle-grade non-coking coal increased, reflecting stronger demand and higher representative prices for premium coal grades. Prices of lower-grade coal remained largely stable, with only marginal fluctuations. Overall, the data suggest mixed price movements across different coal grades, with premium coal witnessing price gains despite the slight decline in the overall National Coal Index.
