The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPS&W) on July 03, 2026, issued the Inland Vessels (Prior Approval for Alteration or Modification) Rules, 2026.
They shall come into force on July 09, 2026.
The following has been stated:
• The rules require vessel owners or operators to obtain prior approval from the designated authority before undertaking major alterations or modifications that affect a vessel's dimensions, capacity, propulsion system, gross tonnage, structural integrity, stability, safety, or service life. Such modifications shall comply with the Inland Vessels (Design and Construction) Rules, 2024, and may require independent technical evaluation and safety assessment where necessary.
• Upon approval, the designated authority will issue a prior approval certificate, which shall be kept on board the vessel, while other minor alterations shall be reported within 30 days.
• The rules also prescribe eligibility criteria for approval, emphasizing compliance with safety, structural integrity, stability, and environmental protection requirements, along with a standard application form for seeking prior approval.
