The Maharashtra Tourism Department on July 17, 2026, amended the Definition of "Hotel" under the Maharashtra Tourism Policy, 2024.
The Government has amended the definition of "Hotel" under the Maharashtra Tourism Policy, 2024, in line with the Ease of Doing Business – Compliance Reduction & Deregulation initiative. While retaining the existing eligibility criteria, such as a minimum of 10 lettable rooms with attached bathrooms and compliance with Ministry of Tourism, Government of India hospitality standards, the amendment removes the requirement for a Star Category Certificate. Privately owned forts and palaces converted into heritage hotels will continue to be eligible under the policy, and Star Category Certification is now explicitly not required, simplifying compliance for hotel projects.
