Industry Specific ComplianceThe Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) on July 24, 2026, reiterates Legal Obligations of OTT Platforms and Social Media under IT Rules, 2021.

The Government has notified the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 under the Information Technology Act, 2000. Part III of these Rules governs publishers of online curated content (OTT platforms), requiring them to ensure that no content prohibited under existing laws is transmitted.

Further, Part II of the Rules imposes due diligence obligations on intermediaries, including social media platforms. These intermediaries must take reasonable efforts to prevent users from hosting, uploading, or sharing unlawful content on their platforms and ensure compliance with applicable legal provisions.
