The Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD) on July 24, 2026, issued notification on Physical Verification of Sugar Stocks Held by Sugar Mills.
The Directorate of Sugar and Vegetable Oil, Government of India, has announced a physical verification of sugar stocks at sugar mills from August 1 to August 14, 2026, in coordination with State authorities. The verification will be carried out by joint teams comprising officials from both the Central and State Governments.
For the purpose of verification, the stock declared in the P-2 return for June 2026 will be treated as the base stock. Sales and dispatches made during July 2026 must be properly accounted for to determine the actual stock available at the time of inspection. Any mismatch between reported and physically verified stock will be treated as a violation of the Sugar Control Order.
In case of discrepancies, action will be initiated under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 and the Sugar Control Order, 2025. Additionally, July sales data will be cross-verified with GST records, and any inconsistency may result in denial of domestic sugar quota for October 2026 along with other legal actions. Sugar mills are therefore directed to maintain accurate records of sales, dispatches, and stock positions.
