The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on August 07, 2026, notified the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Amendment Regulations, 2026, further amending the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations, 2018, after considering objections and suggestions received on the draft regulations.
The amendment inserts Pan Masala into Schedule IV containing the list of suggestive packaging materials. For pan masala, packaging may consist of paper, paper board, cellulose or other naturally derived materials, provided such materials are free from plastic, synthetic polymers, copolymers, laminates, aluminium foil and metallised layers.
The amendment also permits tin or glass containers for packaging pan masala. Further, the specified provisions of the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016 relating to plastic packaging shall also apply to such packaging. The regulations come into force from the date of their publication in the Official Gazette.
