The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying (MoFAHD) on August 12, 2026, issued the notification regarding the request to stop illegal transportation and slaughtering of animals, and promotion of humane treatment of animals Published by Chandigarh Government.
The following has been stated namely: -
• Large numbers of animals are reportedly transported and slaughtered illegally, particularly during festivals, often without following prescribed animal-welfare requirements.
• Non-compliance during transportation can cause severe cruelty, unnecessary pain, injuries and even death of animals.
• Cruelty to animals is punishable under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and animal protection is also reflected in Articles 48, 48A and 51A(g) of the Constitution.
• Authorities are requested to strictly implement animal-welfare laws, take stringent action against offenders, create public awareness through posters/social and electronic media, and submit quarterly enforcement-status reports for further action.
