The Ministry of Defence (MoD), on August 5, 2026, published the draft Roorkee Cantonment Building Bye-laws, 2026 under Section 251 of the Cantonments Act, 2006, proposing to supersede U.P. Gazette Notification No. 3455/IX-29C 1937 dated January 5, 1938. The draft bye-laws will apply within the limits of Roorkee Cantonment and will come into force upon their final publication in the Official Gazette.
The draft provides general requirements and definitions governing construction and development activities, including Access, Accessory Building, Addition to a Building, Advertising Sign, Air-Conditioning, Alteration of a Building and Amenity Space. “Alteration of a building” includes subdivision of rooms, changes affecting the cubic content of rooms, and conversion of passages or spaces into rooms. Amenity space covers facilities such as open spaces, parks, recreational grounds, playgrounds, sports complexes, gardens and parking areas.
The draft has been issued for public consultation, with interested persons invited to submit objections or suggestions within 30 days from the date the Gazette copies are made available to the public. Comments may be submitted to the Cantonment Board, Roorkee or through the specified email address.
