The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, through its notification dated August 27, 2026, has notified the Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026, establishing a framework for the uniform adoption, synchronisation, and use of Indian Standard Time (IST) across India.
The following has been stated:
The Rules shall come into force after 180 days from their publication in the Official Gazette. IST shall be the standard time reference for legal, administrative, commercial, transport, financial, and other official purposes across India.
Government offices, public institutions, and critical sectors shall synchronise their time systems with authorised and traceable timing sources. The Rules also prescribe cybersecurity, redundancy, and contingency requirements for time-synchronisation systems, with periodic audits and penalties applicable for non-compliance.
