The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution (MoCAF&PD) on September 01, 2026, notified regarding the reduction in the sugar stock holding limit for sugar dealers to 2,000 quintals from September 15, 2026.
The Government has reduced the stock holding limit for sugar dealers from 4,000 quintals to 2,000 quintals, effective from September 15, 2026 to November 30, 2026, to curb hoarding, speculative trading and excessive accumulation of sugar stocks. Dealers shall not hold sugar for more than 30 days from the date of receipt and shall not maintain stocks exceeding 2,000 quintals at any location across India. However, the existing limit of 4,000 quintals will continue for Kolkata and its extended metropolitan areas due to the region’s specific supply requirements.
The Government will continue intensive monitoring, stock declarations and physical verification of sugar mills, dealers and traders to ensure adequate availability, orderly supply and price stability.
