The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has published the Draft Lansdowne Cantonment Building Bye-Laws, 2026 under Section 251 of the Cantonments Act, 2006. The draft is proposed to supersede the earlier notification dated December 21, 1946, and is intended to regulate building and development activities within the limits of Lansdowne Cantonment.
The proposed Bye-Laws would apply to construction, re-construction, additions and alterations of buildings within the Cantonment. They set out definitions and regulatory concepts relating to access, apartments, applicants, building envelope, building height, building line, built-up area, architectural projections, basements, balconies and barrier-free access, among others. The draft also provides that an applicant must have legally valid occupancy rights over leased, old-grant or private land for undertaking construction or alteration.
The Bye-Laws are presently at the draft stage and are therefore not yet operative. The public has been given 30 days from the date on which the Gazette copies are made available to submit objections or suggestions to the Cantonment Board, Lansdowne. The final Bye-Laws will come into force only upon their final publication in the Official Gazette by the Central Government.
