The Department of Consumer Affairs, on October 08, 2026, published the Draft Rajasthan Legal Metrology (Government Approved Test Centre) Rules, 2026, under Section 53 of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, in consultation with the Central Government. The draft was notified on October 8, 2026, and published in the Rajasthan Gazette on October 9, 2026, to establish a framework for approval and regulation of Government Approved Test Centres (GATCs).
The draft rules prescribe an application fee of ₹10,000 and require applications to be submitted by the Centre’s Principal Officer. The Principal Officer must have at least three years of experience in legal metrology, possess prescribed qualifications and complete the required basic training at the Indian Institute of Legal Metrology, Ranchi, along with the Centre’s technical employees. The Controller, Legal Metrology, Rajasthan, will assess infrastructure, testing equipment, qualified manpower and service capacity and arrange a premises inspection before granting approval. Initial approval may be granted for one year, with subsequent renewals for periods of up to five years. The draft also proposes an approval fee of ₹3 lakh for each weight or measure and an annual renewal fee of ₹1 lakh for each weight or measure. An appeal against rejection may be filed within 30 days, subject to a fee of ₹500.
The draft rules will come into force only upon their final publication in the Official Gazette.
