The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) on September 18, 2026, issued a notification regarding the guidelines for the utilization of overburden and rejects from non-coal mining projects.
The following has been stated: -
•The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has streamlined procedures for utilizing overburden (OB) and rejects generated from non-coal mining projects holding valid Environmental Clearance (EC).
•Mine operators must obtain an EC amendment by submitting an approved or modified Mining Plan, specifying quantities, securing necessary State Government and Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) permissions, and detailing land-use changes.
•The measures aim to promote scientific mine management and optimize mineral resource utilization.
•Operators must also update their Environmental Management Plans (EMP), where required, to address environmental risks, including dust generation and wastewater management, particularly during the re-handling of legacy waste.
