The Government of Maharashtra on October 22, 2026, under Section 1(3) of the Maharashtra Lifts, Escalators and Moving Walks Act, 2017 (Maharashtra Act No. XV of 2018), has appointed November 1, 2026, as the date on which the Act will come into force.
The Act regulates the construction, erection, maintenance and safe operation of lifts, escalators and moving walks across Maharashtra. Its provisions include requirements for prior installation permission, licensing for operation, inspection and maintenance, periodic inspection at least once a year, third-party insurance, accident reporting and maintenance of logbooks.
The Act will apply throughout Maharashtra from November 1, 2026, and replaces the Maharashtra Lifts Act, 1939, subject to the savings provisions specified in the Act. Owners and operators of lifts, escalators and moving walks should review the applicable licensing, safety, inspection and maintenance requirements before the commencement date.
