The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI), on October 29, 2026, has announced “Grievance Resolution Month” during November 2026 to accelerate the meaningful resolution of pending policyholder grievances and disputes.
The initiative will focus particularly on long-pending grievances and disputes. As on March 31, 2026, around 2.21 lakh cases were pending before Consumer Commissions and Judicial Courts, of which approximately 72.49% had remained pending for more than one year. Around 11 lakh cases were also reportedly pending before MACT.
Insurers have been advised to review pending matters, prioritise long-pending cases, settle litigation amicably wherever legally and factually sustainable, ensure prompt compliance with Insurance Ombudsman Awards, expedite grievances pending before other forums and strengthen litigation management.
Insurers have also been encouraged to identify recurring causes of grievances and implement corrective and preventive measures. IRDAI has clarified that the objective is not merely to increase disposal numbers but to achieve fair, meaningful and sustainable grievance resolution.
The Life Insurance Council, General Insurance Council and Council for Insurance Ombudsmen will support the initiative. IRDAI, along with the Councils and State-wise Lead Insurers, will also conduct outreach programmes across the country, with special emphasis on Tier-II and Tier-III cities.
