Industry Specific ComplianceThe National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), on November 4, 2026, through its circular addressed to all UPI member banks and UPI application providers, has introduced changes to the UPI dispute management rules in the Unified Dispute and Resolution System (URCS) to standardise dispute handling and address specific transaction-related scenarios.

The key changes include renaming “Wrong Credit Chargeback” as “Wrong Payment – Reversal Request”; permitting Wrong Payment – Reversal Request and Fraud Chargeback for deemed-approved transactions after TCC updates; revising existing dispute reason codes; and introducing additional reason codes for excess charges, duplicate/multiple transactions, cancelled or returned goods, defective or undelivered goods/services, and Government Revenue Collection Payments. Reason Code 1084 – Duplicate/Multiple Transaction has been discontinued. The circular also prescribes supporting evidence requirements, including customer complaints, payment receipts, purchase invoices, FIR/NCRP copies and customer confirmations, depending on the dispute category.

The revised dispute management rules will be implemented in URCS with effect from November 25, 2026. Member banks are required to make the necessary changes in their applicable systems and disseminate the updated requirements to concerned officials.
